A Guide and Guidance for Alloy Steel S7 Round Bar

Alloy Steel S7 Round Bars

Depending on the type of alloy steel you need, you must follow different guidelines for making a round bar. This article will spotlight some of the key points that you will need to know. The guide includes information on annealing, quenching, heat treatment, and general tooling and molding applications.

Annealing

AISI S7 is an air-hardening tool steel with excellent impact resistance. Its high toughness, good machinability, and dimensional stability make it a good choice for various applications. It is suitable for a range of cold-hot applications. It is commonly used for riveting, bending, and forging chisels and rivet sets. It also finds applications in a variety of other areas. Alloy Steel S7 Round Bar is often used for forming, forging, and cold-work areas. It has excellent impact resistance and high flexibility and can be heat-treated to 400 degrees Fahrenheit. It also has moderate resistance to softening at high temperatures and yield strength of 235 ksi at 500 degrees Fahrenheit. Alloy Steel S7 has a spot of hardness 54-56 HRC. It is less chromium enriched than most other grades. It is also less prone to wear. This makes it ideal for heat-treated deformation.

Heat Treatment After Forging

Heat treatment is an important value-added service offered by steel forgings. It can harden steel and alter materials’ properties with different crystal structures. Heat-treatment processes include quenching, tempering, annealing, normalizing, and austenitizing. Annealing is a process that reduces the hardness of heat-treated steel. Annealing also refines the structure of forgings. It is often used as a conditioning treatment before the final heat treatment. It is carried out in a protective atmosphere, reduces non-metallic inclusions, and improves polishability for critical surfaces. During heat treatment, the mechanical properties of steel forgings are changed. Alloy steel is heat treated to achieve a certain set of properties. These properties include strength, flexibility, and wear resistance. Depending on the temperature reached, heat treatment can harden or soften steel. Forgings must be properly cooled after the heat treatment to achieve the proper properties. The temperature chosen is usually a trial and error process. Forgings should be forged at 1600oF. Depending on the type of alloy steel, the temperature will vary.

Quench in Air

The Alloy Steel S7 Round Bar is used in many applications, such as oil and gas. It has excellent shock resistance and impact strength. The tensile strength and elongation are high, and the hardenability is great. They are high-hardenability steel that is de-carb free and exhibits minimal distortion during hardening. It is ideal for applications where the temperature of the workpiece exceeds the limits of normal carbon tool steel. It is a medium-hot-work steel that can be tempered to the desired heating rate of two hours per inch of section thickness. It can be tempered to a hardness of 66 HRC, whereas 1.00 pct carbon tool steel is tempered to 100 HRC. Its excellent flexibility allows for quick cooling rates. It is highly resistant to deformation during heat treatment.

General Tooling and Molding Applications

Alloy S7 is a versatile steel with high strength and impact resistance. It is also known for its good hardening properties and low to medium wear resistance. This steel is often used for automotive, construction, and engineering. It is a common choice for hot and cold work applications. When choosing the S7 alloy grade, consider the hardness, impact resistance, and surface hardness. It is also a good choice for applications where the product must retain its shape in extreme temperatures.
